One of Life’s mysteries Baking powder, Baking soda, Sodium bicarbonate aka Bicarbonate of soda………

So what’s the difference?

Baking powder is made up of several ingredients – and one of these is sodium bicarbonate.  Baking Powder is Bicarbonate of Soda PLUS cream of tartar which acts as a raising agent in baking. 

Baking soda it’s just another name for sodium bicarbonate.

Sodium bicarbonate it may have been granted the least-catchy name, but sodium bicarbonate is the most essential member of the mystery baking substance family.

Also known as bicarbonate of soda, it’s a mixture of sodium and hydrogen carbonate, is alkaline, and has a bitter taste.

Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) is a cheap, eco-friendly deodoriser that can help with all sorts of cleaning problems.  It's used regularly in baking but it's also excellent for cleaning around the house.

Fill RAW Bicarbonate of sodais not recommended for baking, the reason being that it is not a food grade bicarbonate of soda it is an ‘industrial/cleaning’ grade so it is more suited to be used for cleaning.

As we begin to pack up from the summer sunshine here are a couple of tips for using Bicarbonate of Soda:

To combat a summer’s worth of grime on your BBQ grill sprinkle some bicarb on your grill-cleaning brush before you scrub your grill.

Before you put your patio furniture away give them a wipe-down with bicarb and water and place bicarb inside the cushion pads’ storage bags to keep them fresh.

It’s good for pet carpet odours, sprinkle it on, leave for a few hours and it hoover up, you can add a little essential oil to give a nice smell.
