I remember choosing anti-perspirants with "48 Hour Protection". I felt that this was a serious upgrade on the 12 hour and 24 hour anti-perspirants that graced the shelves in the 1990s. I was impressed that a spray could block up my pits for that long. But, did I really smell that bad? Did the sweat need wringing from my shirts? Was I ultra self-conscious? Easily influenced by the TV ads?

Progress continues and now you will find "96 Hour Protection" on the shelves of pharmacies and supermarkets. These anti-perspirants even claim to continue working after taking a shower. "Dermatologically Tested" and "Expert Endorsed" too. Wow!

I can tell you that something smells funny and it is not you or me.

Which Ingredients Smell Funny?

Let's take a look at a few of the ingredients and find out.

Aluminium

Aluminium is a common ingredient in anti-perspirants that works by “plugging” sweat ducts to stop sweating. The problem is that aluminium increases our cells’ tendency to mutate, which increases the chance of a mutation into a cancerous cell. Aluminium can also pose a threat to those on low kidney function. Higher traces of aluminium are found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.

Our bodies are designed to sweat; it’s a means of cooling down. We know that sweating can be inconvenient, but it’s necessary for a healthy body!

Alcohol

Many anti-perspirants contain alcohol, which is used to dissolve different ingredients and to help the product dry quickly when applied. Alcohol kills some of the bacteria that forms odour, but it can also dry out skin and contribute to irritation.

Earth Conscious deodorants use gentler ingredients such as organic coconut oil for their antibacterial, anti-fungal and moisturising qualities.

Butylphenyl Methylpropional

Butylphenyl methylpropional is a known skin and respiratory irritant, and can also be harmful to developing foetuses.

Diethanolamine

Diethanolamine is an ingredient commonly used in deodorants and is directly linked to cancer.

Fragrance and Parfum

Avoid products with “fragrance” on labels. When you see this term or other similar terms like “Eau de Toilette” or “Parfum,” it means the product contains undisclosed ingredients – sometimes more than a hundred of them. Without full transparency, it’s impossible to know what you’re being exposed to.
